At 1315 the first tornado was spotted near 144th Avenue and I-25, touching down for 15 minutes and causing no damage. At 1349 a second, long track tornado touched down southeast of Buckley Air Force Base. This tornado remained on the ground for 30 minutes, traveling a distance of about 10 miles, prompting the brief evacuation of Aurora's 911 Center. Numerous residential and retail occupancies sustained light to moderate damage in and around the Southlands Mall area. Incoming units had a difficult time accessing the scene, lanes on E-470 became impassible as motorists took cover under the overpasses. Crews arrived to find several vehicles tossed, numerous natural gas leaks and power lines down. One unoccupied construction trailer was completely destroyed. Several minor injuries were reported from this area, mostly hail or debris related. APD took on the massive task of evacuating the entire Southlands Complex. AFD Engine 13 watched the situation unfold and took a cracked windshield with no injuries to firefighters.

At 1440 tornado number 3 touched down 5 miles south of Bennett along the Kiowa-Bennett Road (Pictured Above). This tornado destroyed two outbuildings and damaged a barn, no injuries were reported. Tornado number 4 touched down at 1445, this one was 5 miles south of Deertrail. It moved over open country and lasted only 2 minutes. The last reported tornado touched down north of Byers at 1500 hours causing no damage. The storm progressed east over mainly open country showing strong wind shear and rotation on radar. Although no additional tornado reports were made, numerous funnel clouds were observed in the storm as it moved into Kansas. Eric Hurst Photos
