June 20, 2009 ~ In the mid afternoon Denver Firefighters were alerted to the area of Jewell and Platte River Drive for a reported water rescue. Multiple companies responded to the area and located a victim in the Platte River, trapped in a rapid. Members of the DFD Under Water Team made entry from the east bank of the river while safety crews stood by on the west bank. Two firefighters pulled the victim free and safely moved back to the riverbank. Additional firefighters assisted with pulling the victim to safety on a steep, rocky access point. The victim was found to be in cardiac arrest and quickly rushed uphill to the trail where firefighters initiated resuscitation. Denver Paramedics were assisted by E23 Firefighters in transporting emergent to Porter Hospital. The circumstances surrounding the incident are unclear at this time, witnesses reported the victim to be an elderly female with a walker. Eric Hurst Photos
