June 29, 2009 ~ Around 0330 Denver Firefighters were called to 48th & Pecos for a reported explosion and fire. First due companies arrived at a one story dollar store to find heavy fire rolling out the Alpha Side windows. A defensive attack was mounted by several hand lines and ground monitors. Command ordered an additional Engine & Truck to assist, then a full 2nd Alarm was filled. Conditions in the building rapidly deteriorated and the fire self vented on the Charlie Side. This began a chain reaction that quickly lead to the collapse of the bowstring truss roof and several load bearing walls. At the height of the incident 4 aerial master streams and 2 ground monitors were in operation. The fire was brought under control within 90 minutes; no extension to nearby buildings or any injuries occurred. The fire remains under investigation.
