July 28th, 2009 ~ Around 2230 West Metro Dispatch alerted units to multiple reports of a Confirmed Structure Fire in the area of 20th & Union. First due Engine 5 reported smoke in the air from their station. E5 arrived a short time later to find a one story with walk out, single family dwelling with heavy fire conditions. Companies made entry and conducted an aggressive interior attack and search. A partial collapse of the 2nd floor occurred early on but didn't stop firefighters from quickly knocking the fire down. The primary search lead to the rescue of two dogs, one was transported by WMFR to the Wheat Ridge Animal Hospital. Extensive slavage and overhaul was conducted and crews located the deceased resident under a portion of collapsed structure. The cause of the fire remains under investigation by West Metro & Lakewood Police. Rick Luebke Photo
